Jaguar Bingham (Jaguar)

“When I found out that I was selected to be a apart of SEM campaign, I was so excited! Movements like this genuinely make a huge difference, in terms of making young DJs like me believe in themselves, but also on a wider, global scale to tackle inequality. Learning tips and gaining advice from the queen (The Black Madonna) has been so useful, and I can now go and apply all that I’ve learnt. I really feel like I will become a better DJ because of this, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity. The fact that Smirnoff is acknowledging that we have a gender imbalance in the music industry and actually offering a solution, shows a bright future indeed. I can’t wait to see how this will impact my peers and all the new female DJs coming through! Together, we can do this!”

About Me

Hey! My name is Jaguar and I’m a DJ based in London but originally from The Channel Islands. When I was 14, I snuck out to go to my first rave which ignited my passion for the dance floor. I’ve always been obsessed with music, but it was when I went to uni in Leeds where I started to pursue music and DJing properly. I joined student radio which changed everything. I loved planning my shows and describing to my listeners why the tracks I’d picked were great, and got such a buzz from DJing out to crowds. Soon I had started my own club nights and was playing around Leeds. After 3 years of DJing and doing student radio, I was then awarded Gold Best Specialist Music show and Silver Best Female at the Student Radio Awards 2016, and I now host a show on Reprezent Radio. My show is a platform for cutting edge electronic music and I’ve brought through some of my favourite artists including Crazy P, Mella Dee, Haai, Fono, Leftwing & Kody and Friend Within. I’ve also done guest mixes for 1Xtra, The Selector and Radar.

I currently work in the broadcasting industry and also as a writer at Mixmag and presenter of our weekly office party, The Lab LDN. The Mixmag guys and gals are such a supportive team, and I learn so much from being exposed to the world’s best DJs each week at The Lab – it’s a great place to pick up mixing tips and hear new tracks! I’ve been DJing properly for 3 years and have played in many venues in the UK including XOYO, Dalston Superstore, Camden Assembly, Beaverworks, Mint Club and Wire – where I played a headline set this year. I went to Ibiza a couple of years ago as a worker, and played in Ibiza Rocks Bar which made me really want to take this seriously. Last summer I DJed on the #SmirnoffHouse at Parklife, V Fest and TRNSMT which was so much fun. I want to do play as many gigs as I can this year and it’s going good so far!

My Goals

My long-term goal is to be a recognised taste-maker and broadcaster in the music industry and to be able to bring through the amazing artists and producers I am meeting along my journey. I’d also love to take my radio shows to the next level, and become the global number 1 destination for new music, and I’m not stopping until I get there. I feel like I am at a tipping point in my career, and being a part of Smirnoff’s Equalising Music campaign is exactly the kind of leg up I need to reach the next level. In a very short amount of time, I have achieved things which I never thought were possible, and I know that I have what it takes to succeed. At the moment, I am doing everything I can to build my profile, and be the best I can be. Working with The Black Madonna was a dream come true – it’s given me a lot of confidence knowing that she believes in me, and she even invited me on her BBC Radio 1 show which was amazing! She is one of my DJ heroes, and this campaign has spurred me on to keep learning, keep growing and to push myself. I’m feeling super motivated, inspired and ready to own it. Let’s go!
